Living in a Valley · Dec 12, 06:44 AM by Dave Polaschek

This morning, I was pondering why I seem to have a problem getting out of the house as early as I’d like. See, I’d like to be at work by about 7am, so I could reliably leave there by 4pm, since with the days as short as they are, that means I get to drive home while there’s still some sunlight out there.

But that same problem hits from the other side. I don’t like driving to work in the dark, either, and that delays my getting ready for work in the morning (well, that and ideas for essays like this one).

But another part of the problem is that I live in a valley of sorts. While the lightening sky is often enough to get me moving, sunrise this morning isn’t until 7:41 this morning, and on top of that, there are the houses across the alley. Looking out my dining-room window, I don’t see any actual sun until after 8.

It’s even worse on the other side. There’s a solid wall of two-story warehouse across the street from me, which not only blocks my view of downtown, but it cuts off about the last hour of sunshine, as well. Even when the sun is up until 4:30 (like it is now), I find myself turning on lights in the house around 3:30 or 4 if I’m home.

I’m not especially thrilled with the short days of winter, but it’s made even worse by the obstacles around me. I’m not sure I like living in a valley.

  1. My mom was always very big on living on a hill. I suppose it is the same. The house across the street from me is for sale—you could move there. Or Reno.

When you tab from web site, it goes to Search instead of message. That’s annoying. But I like being able to yak at you.
