In England, the signs are different. While many of the roads are numbered, the number sign is often the smallest sign at the intersection, and may not be there at all. The trick, instead, is that you pick out a city in the direction you're looking to go (which can be tricky as well, since how far off the city will be, and how big of a city it takes to get the signpost are dependent on the size of the road you'll take to get there), and then look for a signpost pointing to that city (or one of the alternates in your mind because you're not sure) to determine what road to take.
After some practice, the English method isn't exactly hard, but I still miss the clear signposting we have in the States, especially as we get nearer our destination (which is literally in the middle of nowhere) and the signs get less helpful.
