At Stonehenge, the parking area and visitor center are on one side of the road, while the actual rocks are on the other side. This is kind of nice, since the parking area, visitor center, etc., are all lower than the road, which is lower than the rocks, so you can actually look at the rocks and only see some people. And since people are fenced back from the rocks, there are quite a few vantage points where you can almost imagine you're alone with the rocks. Until someone bumps you as they pass you on the path. Sigh.
