Later in the trip, I talked about this with Dave Kitson. He explained that while maintaining hedges was fairly low maintainance (it only needs to be done every fifteen or twenty years once the hedge is in good shape), the expertise needed to maintain them was very hard to find anymore. It's turning into a lost art. Sigh.
