Walk along the river 2 Oct 2001

Took a walk. Across the Stone Arch Bridge, through Mill Ruins Park, up to Bridge 9, then back across to Dinkytown. It's a relatively new route, since the grand opening for the park was just yesterday.

The Xcel Energy tailrace of the Main St. Dam. There's a lot of water. I had to walk a bit farther to find out why. It's hard to tell because of the poor resolution of this camera, but there's no water coming over the main spillway of St. Anthony Falls here. There are some white dots on the left of the spillway that you can just barely see. They're birds with a new place to rest.

The old tailrace that's been restored in Mill Ruins Park. Looking downstream. The restored tailrace in Mill Ruins Park. Looking upstream. Note that there's no moving water yet.

A tug and a pair of empty barges (you can tell by how high in the water they're riding) headed downstream. The tug belongs to the aggregate company in north Minneapolis, and is a regular sight on this part of the river. Now that Mill Ruins Park is open, you can walk farther downstream on the downtown side of the riverfront. And you can see the river side of the U of M's steam plant more clearly. I sure hope they spruce it up one of these days.

After walking back across Bridge 9, you have to head up the hill behind the Mineral Resources Research Center. It's been empty for quite a few years, and has seen better days.
