North Metro Humane Society Closing

Note that this information is from January of 2001. The person who wrote the original message is no longer involved with the rescue organization, so I’ve removed the contact information. I’m keeping this page around as people still want to know what happened to the shelter, though.

The North Metro Humane Society in Coon Rapids, MN is closing its doors. Currently, they do not know if this will be a permanent closure or a temporary setback. Unfortunately, they have run into some serious trouble and are unable to keep the shelter operational as they attempt to resolve their issues.

Effective Monday, January 15, 2001 the North Metro Humane Society is no longer accepting any animals and is offering all of its current animals for 1/2 off the adoption price. The shelter currently has approximately 100 dogs, 80 cats, and 30 miscellaneous (birds, rabbits, rodents, etc) animals.

Calls have gone out to other area shelters asking them to come to the North Metro Humane Society and take whatever animals they would like.

Unfortunately, we don’t believe that this will be enough help. The North Metro Humane Society needs families that are willing to foster the dogs, cats, and miscellaneous that are currently at the shelter. Second Chance Rescue in Ham Lake, MN has offered to pay all vet costs incurred with fostering the animals.

If you or anyone you know, is interested in becoming a foster family for these animals OR is interested in giving one or more of these animals a permanent home, please go to the North Metro Humane Society and take a look at the animals currently in their shelter.

Please be warned the conditions at the shelter are not good - the shelter is dirty, smelly and generally not appealing. Many of the animals are dirty, living in dirty kennels and some are sick with respiratory infections or other curable, but currently untreated conditions. The staff is not trained very well, not very knowledgeable and may be crabby as they will be losing their jobs soon. I just want you to be prepared if you should choose to go to the shelter.

Please consider becoming a foster family - or pass this along to someone who might be interested. These animals need help. These animals were originally surrendered to the shelter because some one could not or would not care for them. Now, these dogs, cats and others are in danger of losing their lives due to human irresponsibility.

If you are interested, the shelter is located at 1411 NW Main Street, Coon Rapids, MN 55448-1425. They can be reached at XXX-XXX-XXXX. If you are interested in fostering an animal talk with Jason or Lori and let them know which animal(s) you are interested in. Once you have been approved through North Metro, please contact Second Chance Rescue Ranch to register with them and they will handle the foster relationship and management of vet bills.

Thank you for any help you can give!!
