21. April, 2002 - good times, bad times

• We did some tailgating yesterday for the single-game ticket sales for the St. Paul Saints. Here are a few pictures:

• Nebraska Researchers Measure the Extent of 'Link Rot' in Distance Education. Apparently the half-life of a link in their study is about 55 months. It would be interesting to run that kind of analysis on the stuff I've linked to over the years. I'd guess that I tend to link to stuff with a shorter half-life, if only because so many of the newspapers I've linked to over the years have wrecked their archives. [librarian]
• Deep Linking Returns to Surface. I don't really care what Bruce Sunstein intended my user experience on the web to be, but companies trying to prevent deep-linking are a part of the link-rot problem. [daypop]

  • Abbey, diocese differ on sex abuse policies
  are stories about sexual abuse by monks at St. John's Abbey. The first of the articles names three monks who taught at St. John's Prep when I was there, and there were rumors about the various boys in the school who were special friends with those monks. In the Saint John's Abbey Policy When a Monk has been Accused of Sexual Abuse or Sexual Exploitation they mention a public statement, but I haven't heard any previous statements about the monks who were teaching while I was at SJP. That made it surprising to me that the Abbey is finally talking about it. It'll be interesting to see whether the topic comes up at our 20th reunion this June. The good thing that the Abbey does is keep the monks on, and continue to work with them. I think that's a lot better policy than the usual Church policy of firing or transferring the offender and paying the victim to be quiet.
